Nice Sunset, Bitch

I got my Cities and Suburbs midterm back, with an A- instead of the B- I expected. I also received a couple of essays back with pretty solid grades as well. I was preoccupied with a variety of things for the rest of the day, and found myself very easily upset while reading about environmental injustice. Aside: There's an unpaid co-op at the Umbra Institute, so named for the Umbrian region of Italy; I initially presumed that it simply meant "The Shadow Institute," which would be pretty cool.
Alanna, Alaric, the Delivery Man and I went to Shaw's at midnight for a Hillel-sponsored event. It was supposed to be a Supermarket Sweep-like event, but no one outside of the guy who made the poster for the event showed, mysteriously enough. We wandered around the store for a while, then rummaged through the Panera trash for their treasured double-bagged bread. Immediately afterward, we witnessed a possible Crime Log entry wherein some idiot was lying down in the street and a cop pulled up and reprimanded him and his friends. Back at 610, Alanna and I did some lines, and it was good.
          Quotes of the day:
"There's only one positive to Hayley's place next year, but it's a big positive. It's on Wigglesworth Street. It's 14 Wiggly." - The Delivery Man

Goodguyprof.png

Today consistently felt like a Friday, which was both good and bad. My Italian class was canceled, leaving only Research Methods to get through. Professor Mrdalj vowed to keep the class "as understandable as possible" due to the topic's dryness (survey bias) and sent out volunteers to pick up coffee and donuts for the class.
          Quotes of the day:

"I got this from licking condoms, so every time I look at it I smirk a little." - Katie
Attendance...
Prof. Mrdalj: "Barbara?"
Student: "She went out for coffee."
Prof. Mrdalj: "That's no excuse."

Remember When

I dreamed that Logan, Alanna and I were at Logan's house, except not his real house. It was a white house, two stories high, with a front porch, trees in the yard and the number 6 by the door. Inside, we met Paulie Walnuts from The Sopranos, who told me that only one of us could lead the group and that we'd have a knife fight to determine who was boss. I told him I had to piss first and walked out to a cliff behind the house, beyond which there were tall apartment buildings, and then the ocean. I relieved myself and heard a police car pull up to a house nearby, so I ran the other way and got lost in the neighborhood. An uncomfortably cheery couple let me into their home, where I was at a loss until Alanna wandered by the window. We walked back to Logan's together, where I again postponed the knife fight to "write down notes for my blog," but woke up before I finished. (This was a little weird, looking back. It's a fully ingrained habit, I guess.)
In the hours before class, I started to sort through the 1200+ co-op jobs that initially came up on COOL. I also took the Jung Typology Test (a variant of the Meyers-Briggs) which said that I'm the INFP type; essentially retaking the test in class confirmed this. A chart was handed out showing where everyone fell, and I was the only INFP. I'm not sure if it makes me feel better (because I fall into a normal range of human behavior) or worse (because I can be summed up in a few sentences.)
Still brimming with initiative, I decided to head to Quincy for some PBP volunteer hours. Transportation was a mess, with the T completely packed until we got to the branch in the Red Line. I got some reading done on this last leg and arrived in Quincy right on time, with five minutes to walk to the church. No one was there. In a dark mood, I turned around and got back on the train home. At least I finished my Research Methods reading, so it wasn't a complete loss. The hour and a half of riding the T around still kind of sucked.

Game of Drones

Today was mildly eventful. Five cops with a piece of paper were hanging out outside my Italian class, I met with a guy from my Research Methods class to work on the next essay together, I uninstalled League of Lemons, and I took an extremely biased Game of Thrones "which house are you" quiz. (It said I was a Stark, but everyone gets that. We all know I should have gotten Lannister.)
          Quotes of the day:
"Ideally you meet the people you know for the rest of your life in college, so stay in touch. I have all your names on Blackboard forever, I have your pictures forever..." - Professor Vicino
"Massholes!" - random guy in Cities and Suburbs
"Pootis stuff..." - Professor Binetti

Disappeared Ones

I woke up to another snowy morning, something that never gets old for me. Iris prepared some chocolate souffles and we watched more of The Sopranos late into the afternoon. Harrison and I went over to Alanna's to share box wine, read Go, Dog. Go! and argue about pictures about waves. We attended the Joyce Manor/Desaparecidos show at the Paradise, which I enjoyed moderately. The music was incredible, but the rowdiness of the crowd during the Desaparecidos set was a bit much for me. At least I've got some hipster cred now, having seen Conor Oberst in person.

Permanent Smiley Face

Iris prepared clam chowder, garlic breadsticks and cornbread muffins for us to share, some of my favorite foods. We watched some more of The Sopranos throughout the day; later on, Katie, Sean, Alaric and Haley joined us for I Saw the Devil, a terrific and brutal Korean revenge film. High points: many. Low point: Dude getting his Achilles' tendon slashed with a scalpel. Coincidentally the only scene I've ever covered my eyes for. (Excluding the part in Chamber of Secrets when Harry stabs the basilisk through the head, but that doesn't count because I was 12 or something.)
          Quotes of the day:
"I told him my name was Veronica, I go to BU, I'm a philosophy major, he asked about a boyfriend, I said yes and walked away." - Alanna
"Arrgghh!  Mirror neurons!" - Sean
"Oh god! Man mode!" - Sean
"God damn! 20 lashes!" - Sean

#fightnight

In my dream, I was on a bus traveling through the mountains in the snow. Shay was sitting in the window seat and we had a conversation about perception. I turned around to talk to Maddie and my father, but some asshole from my high school kept interrupting our singing with bird calls. I also remember my brother being paraplegic and me being completely blithe about it, which bothered my dream self. Not the most exciting, but quite vivid. I woke up early and messed around with Minecraft for a while, and was pleased with the Edward Gorey Google logo.
Alaric, Sean and I signed the lease on 1023 Tremont for next year. I'm equal parts excited and afraid for this new responsibility. In the evening, it was party time. I joined Harrison, Eliot, Eric H and Alanna for some raucous singing, humming and guitar playing in the common room. Iris came as well, though she declined to sing along. Harrison and I had a wrestling match, and he completely kicked my tail this time. The first thing he did was to drop me on my shoulder, which still hurts something terrible; I also got some nasty rugburn a la Alaric's last time we wrestled, so I guess karma is a thing. Despite the physical inconvenience, I had a wonderful night with friends.
          Quotes of the day:
"That's the first time I've ever heard a cop yell 'freeze!'" - Eric H
"We have like 5 TAs. We have B-Bach, This Guy, That Guy, Brice and Joey Ramon." - Eliot

The Gauntlet II: Electric Boogaloo

For the first time in my life, I drank a 5 Hour Energy this morning, knowing full well that it was my only shot at staying awake today. It tasted like Red Bull with bad medicine flavoring. After finishing my work and talking to Harrison about the world's problems, I got my CaS stuff in on time, did pretty well on my Italian test, and then struggled through my Political Ecology work prior to class. I was crashing just around this time, but at least I made it to class.
          Quote of the day:
Me: "8333%? That's, like, my fucking life!"
Alaric: "That's 83 days' worth of vitamin B12. Get ready to die."

Little Rascals

My brain is haywire. It woke me up at 8, after precious few hours of sleep, and after I fell asleep again, my alarm didn't wake me up at 11, so I missed Research Methods. In better news, I've tentatively acquired a Desaparecidos ticket for Sunday since Harrison forwarded a Craigslist offer to me. Iris brought over some pineapple pizza, we watched more of The Sopranos (finishing season 3), and I interrupted her yawn to our great amusement. Then, to work. I was unaware until now that the Cities and Suburbs readings for tomorrow were not a selection from Suburban Nation, but all of it. I killed that in about four hours, did a reaction paper and studied for my Italian test tomorrow as well. Another all-nighter under my belt.
          Quotes of the day:
"What did you do, Little Rascal?" - Professor Binetti
...
Me: "[redacted] dropped a Golden Bear? Spilled the nectar of the gods?"
Alaric: "Don't worry, I'm sure the gods had a good laugh about it."

Do-Over

I passed out twice during my alleged all-nighter without an alarm set, but somehow I woke up both times without missing anything. It turns out that all this sleeplessness was for naught; my co-op class was canceled! Later on, Iris and I watched a couple more episodes of The Sopranos. Only 2 episodes left in the third season, I see excitement ahead.

Plank That Soulja Boy

I joined Alaric and Sean for a deck today, the first in some time. We chose to listen to the Micspam playlist, which was either a good or bad decision. When the one-minute Superman card came up, we played a timeless classic to pump ourselves up: "Crank That Soulja Boy". Much later, I ended up pulling an all-nighter so as not to miss co-op class again, occupying myself with an attempt at sketching, among other tasks.

Winter Is Coming

If yesterday was lazy, today was straight-up slothful. I woke up late, reeling from a dream in which I served as an official greeter to a variety of military officers and politicians outside some kind of government building. I shook hands with JFK at one point! Anyway, Iris and I finished off the second season of Game of Thrones, I cooked up some squash seeds into a little snack, and then we watched a couple of Sopranos episodes. (Iris is currently in season 3.) I attempted a run, but it was unbelievably cold out, plus my iPod died in the first two minutes. I feel like permafrost has formed on my crotch.

Salsa Starch

Today was a prime example of a lazy Saturday, though I'm treating it as Friday due to the 3-day weekend. Iris and I finished the first season of Game of Thrones, argued about vice legalization for a while, and then started season two. Eventually, she cooked a wonderful dinner for us to share, including salmon, pasta with white sauce, and broccoli. Alanna and Nate showed up for A Scanner Darkly; after 45 minutes, Alaric and Haley finally showed up and we were able to proceed. Though admittedly smoother in style than its predecessor Waking Life, I prefer the latter's episodic style, subject matter, artistic license, and lack of Keanu Reeves (though A Scanner Darkly benefits from Robert Downey Jr.'s presence.) Scanner is also hobbled (in my opinion) by its grandiose but incomplete message on ethics and wrongdoing in pursuit of justice, delivered in the form of a one-sided conversation between a main character and an until-this-point-unknown character. Guess who gets to dole out the exposition here. If you guessed the unknown, you were right. All in all, I suppose it's unfair to excessively compare A Scanner Darkly to Waking Life, but all things considered, I still feel very lukewarm about it. After the movie, Iris and I ripped through more GoT episodes, reaching episode 5 in the second season. At this rate, we'll kill it tomorrow.

Splish Splash

After ragequitting Minecraft due to repetitive death from lava and l33t commando snipers goddamn skeletons, I soothed myself with some SuperFreakonomics. Iris and I continued our TV binge with episodes 4 through 8 of Game of Thrones, which I've quickly become addicted to. In between episodes, Harrison and Eliot came in to serenade us, and Harrison broke a guitar string for the first time. Later on, I went for a Fens run, a mistake. The pavement seems infused with ice, and I slipped and fell at one point, bloodying my knee. I returned to settle down in a bubble bath (yup) and relaxed in the water for a while.

The Gauntlet

I've had tougher days, but not within recent memory. Before class even started, I was forced to get up early to review my co-op resume with a random advisor. My Cities and Suburbs test, worth 20% of my grade, was disappointing; I'm sure I passed, but beyond that I can't be sure. In Italian, I didn't have to give my monologue because Professor Binetti singled out those students who didn't do their dialogues yesterday and had the class throw random questions at them. This was embarrassing because I'm slow to speak in Italian, as well as sleep-deprived. After this I busted my ass getting through my Political Ecology work, successfully completing it all at the last minute, and chilling out in the class itself. The only interruptions to my work came in the form of a letter from my grandmother, and then Alaric informing me that we got the apartment on 1023 Tremont! Success! After class, nothing was left to do but fall apart like a rapidly destructuring block of Jello. Iris and I began Game of Thrones, which she seems to like better in a TV-show format. I feel like I've aged a year in one day.

Oh Shit Work Time Oh My God

I dreamed about Minecraft, probably not a good sign. Today was productive, though; Professor Mrdalj canceled Research Methods so that the lit review groups could meet and get their shit together, and get it together we did. A bit more work, a page and a half each spread among four people and we'll be set for tomorrow's deadline. After Italian (which I was able to leave within ten minutes), Alanna and I raided Stetson West for an ungodly amount of food. This was actually a great deal of fun; I'm not proud that I nearly filled a coffee cup with the limited amount of available hummus.
Reality set in after the fooding. Things to do for tomorrow: Study for what an undoubtedly enraging Cities and Suburbs test for tomorrow. Write a reaction paper on our Fenway tour, due in the same class. Write and memorize an Italian monologue, due to having no partner to do a dialogue with. Do a large amount of reading for Political Ecology. Write a reaction paper for the same. Get a research project outline together for Political Ecology (I have no clue what my project will be as of this moment.) To quote Joe Cabot in Reservoir Dogs: "Shit your pants, dive in and swim."
          Quote of the day:
"Fuck yeah, my Valentine's Glock!" - Alaric

p.s. Sorry for all the fecal references in this entry. I tend to try and avoid profanity whenever possible, but today is not a normal day.
p.p.s. The title was actually one of my blog notes for the day, which should give some insight into my frame of mind.

In Which Minor Productivity Ensues

Our planned lit review drafting meeting failed to happen due to lack of response from most of my team, so everything's getting done tomorrow, it seems. I got my calendar up to speed (though leaving SWIM alone), finally obtained a new Husky Card due to inability to enter the dining hall (R.I.P. sweet prince, you were taken too soon. 8/2011-2/2013) and put in some work on apartment applications with Alaric and Sean.

Sunday School

Alaric and I met with another realtor, this one from Symphony Properties, to see a couple of apartments. The first, the improbably numbered 420 Massachusetts Avenue, was nicer apartment-wise than what we have now, though the laundry situation was rather undesirable (1 washer and 1 dryer in the basement, shared by the building.) The location was sweet, though; just across from the Mass Ave Orange Line stop and a little way down the street. The second place we saw instantly won a place in my heart: 1023 Tremont, a minute down the street from IV and located in a slightly undesirable neighborhood. It's adjacent to a smoke shop, as well as a moment's walk from "Kennedy Fried Chicken," a curry place, a hairdresser and a bodega. It's the cheapest place we've looked at and the bedrooms are huge. Hopefully we can jump on that one, depending on Sean's input.
We joined the pep band in its trip to TD Garden for the men's shot at the Beanpot title. We all knew the situation was near-hopeless; we were up against the irritatingly good BC. We haven't won a men's Beanpot in 25 years. (The women have fared better, beating the other 3 teams with a total of 16 Beanpot victories over the tournament's history.) This year was not fated to be the game changer. Though the game was momentarily exciting for a few minutes (score 4-3), we lost 6-3 in the end. Alanna and I were called nerds by some BC fans, to which I retorted, "Safety school!" The NU fan section was powerful as usual, with a great chant: "Where's your pope?" At the end of the day, even though we lost, there was still a story everyone could get behind: Harvard defeating BU, an improbable and hilarious loss made even better because 1) we beat them first and 2) their current seniors have never seen a Beanpot win, and just got handed 4th place by lolsports Harvard.

We Are the Dreamers Who Dream

I dreamed that I reached a mountaintop camp, where I met Ret. Maj. Payne from the Saugerties American Legion. He showed me a weathered monument and told me how he was one of what he called the vigilants, a "second wave" in case the D-Day invasion failed. We visited a small town nearby, where there seemed to be deep tensions between the townspeople and the old men. On a stairway inside an office/general store, a nasty-looking man started a screaming fight with Maj. Payne, who told me to keep moving. I met up with the rest of my group, who told me I had to jump down a drain to leave the town. It was only a foot wide and constantly flowing with water, and I worried that I'd get stuck and drown inside. I thought, "If this was a lucid dream, I could just force it to widen." At which point I realized that I was dreaming, and desperately tried to hang on but failed. I fell asleep again and dreamed of fireworks over the suburbs, hanging out in Harrison's basement, and world-famous iced tea.
During the night, it became crunch time for my lit review. I went to the 4th ("silent") floor of Snell for the first time eve and got down to the nitty gritty, putting in some serious research. I was pestered by a couple of people behind me speaking in stage whispers and, at one point, reverting to 5th grade and doing bird calls. I returned home after a few hours, feeling satisfied with my temporarily solid work ethic.

Football Head!

Iris' birthday began very quietly. I walked to Shaw's to obtain an ice cream cake; the walk there was a lot of fun because people were walking down the middle of the street, with a car coming along every five minutes or so. I even ran into Sabs and Lauren near Utrecht. Shaw's itself was a bit of a shit show, with only 3 registers open and a line stretching back into the aisles for each one. I occupied myself in the queue by listening to music and dancing a bit (#idgaf) and was beginning to fear that the cake might melt when I reached the front. The line took maybe 40 minutes, but what can you do?
As it happens, the cake had melted, albeit only slightly. The walk back was hell - every time I think of something I might need and then decide not to bring it along, that's when I need it most. In this case: my gloves. I saw that 5 Napkin Burger was open when I passed by, so Iris and I decided to go there for a birthday dinner. We were seated right next to the door after maybe 10 minutes' wait; the burgers were great, our server was exceedingly pleasant despite the high volume of customers, and the decor was low-key yet aesthetically pleasing. Think "light industrial chic." As a bonus, there was a babby in a fuzzy wuzzy bear suit at a nearby table, which Iris was perfectly positioned to stare at.
When we returned, the ambush was launched. I've never seen a surprise party go over as a surprise, but it seems that this one did. We had around 20 people in attendance, shared some cake and hung out. The Delivery Man went on an amusing monologue about a mafioso and his baker friend. Overall, a successful day (I hope.)
          Quotes of the day:

Finding Nemo; Or, Wicked Stawm Comin'

Alaric, Sean and I went apartment hunting today, meeting a realtor from Preston Properties at a place on Westland Avenue. We were pleased with the 5 or 6 units he showed us there, and he proved to be courteous, professional and not sleazy. Still, $3200/month between the three of us (some utilities included) is at the top of our price range, so we'll look some more before we choose an apartment. When we left, the blizzard was beginning to stick.
Fast forward a few hours -- Iris and Harrison had a romantic dinner with candlelight in the common room. The storm outside was unbelievable, one of the heaviest snowfalls I've seen in my life. The light outside seemed to glow through the falling snow, first purple, then orange, a strange sight after nightfall. I napped on the couch and woke up to Alaric and Iris starting The Manchurian Candidate, which they thought was some sort of historical drama... heh heh heh. Cue the "omg wtf"s when they realized it was a creepy psychological thriller.

Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy

This Thursday was delightfully painless. My Cities and Suburbs class consisted of a forty-minute walk through the Fenway neighborhood, discussing the planned developments there. (Boylston Street is slated to be the new Newbury Street, essentially.) Also, dreadful news: Tasty Burger will probably be destroyed during this redevelopment. I split off from the group when we headed back and sat for a few minutes at the John Endecott monument, enjoying the day and watching people go by. (It's the statue of that Puritan guy over by the MFA.) I then missed Italian due to being confused about the time, but I spoke to my professor and apparently nothing happened. My honors seminar was cancelled, so my busiest academic day became one of the easiest this week. Alaric and I have been trading emails with a realtor or two, setting up appointments. The hunt for an apartment has begun in earnest. Iris and I have a new babby, a stuffed hippo named Augustus; he arrived in the mail today. In the evening, we enjoyed American Psycho with Alaric, Haley, Sean and Katie.
          Quotes of the day:
"It was a blind taste test. For flavored condoms. And we both got it right. And they gave us prizes." - Katie
"Can't you feel the deliciousness radiating off it?" - Sean
"You can't argue with success." - Sean
"I would do anything to be inside children's." - Jaimie (via text)

Me: "They call me the Yologarch."

Don't Bro Me If You Don't Know Me

Alaric and I went to the apartment fair at Curry to arrange meetings with some realtors. We spoke to a variety of people in search of 3-4 person apartments in the $2600-$3000 range. We had the great honor of meeting J-Reezy of Greenline Realty, the bro'in'est bro ever to bro. "Yeah man, I have some real nice places in Mission Hill that you'd really like." Yes, I'm sure you do, man.

Swag Springs Eternal

I shared a dinner at Stetson West with Sabrina and Harrison this evening, though Sabs had to take off early for some engagement or another. Later on, Iris harangued me about Minecraft, which she associates with a 14 year old boy. I was unperturbed.
          Quote of the day:
"Let's get that Rangers swag." - Harrison, 3 minutes after vowing never to say "swag" again

Mo Sweets Mo Obesity

Nothing starts off the day better than a hot shave, accompanied by energetic music to dance to. I felt pretty good this morning. My Cities and Suburbs class today was a trip to the observation deck of the Prudential, which was fun and informative. (We were learning about development and land use patterns in Boston.) I left a little early to make it to Italian, where Professor Binetti started singing "Sweets For My Sweet." This was a little weird because Iris and I listened to a few songs the other day ("Tubthumping" and "Mo Money Mo Problems") which then played on the radio at Tasty Burger, and this was another of the songs I played. Full circles all over the place. I collapsed into a long sleep not long after class was done.

2 BURGERS SINCE THE POWER OUTAGE

I woke up from a wild dream this morning. I remember little of it, but I recall crossing a bridge in the snow. I also remember the final sequence, during which I was chased through a dark road in the woods by men on horses while a voice called out, "Highwaymen!" Which was pretty damn cool, now that I consider it. Along with Iris and Harrison, I disinterestedly watched the Super Bowl and "rooted" for the Ravens. Iris and I went to Tasty Burger after we realized that we were starving to death. I spent the rest of the night playing Minecraft, thanks to Alaric... its addictive properties are downright frightening.

Articles of Confederation

I found myself up at 11 o'clock for a volunteer shift at the Greater Boston Food Bank, which went quite well. Over a three hour period of sorting frozen meats, only one dick joke was made - our group leader saying "I've got pork on both sides of me" - and whatever station the radio was tuned to was killing it. I also got to handle cow tongues. On the walk back through South Boston (incidentally, the same street Alanna and I traveled not too long ago), we passed a car wash with an electronic sign proclaiming, among other true facts, that "Howie Mandel washes his soul patch here."
After a satisfying 59-52 win over respected rival Drexel in men's basketball, I headed home. A quick change later, I walked out with Iris, Sean and Katie on a double date. We dined at a sushi place called Ma Soba near the Common, which proved to be a great idea. The restaurant was uncrowded, the rolls and shrimp/broccoli entree were great, and Kenny G or someone like him was rocking the speakers. The only downside was the vegetarian dumplings, which were nearly tasteless. (We got three of the latter to split between the four of us.) The company was good and I'm pleased that our plans worked out in the end. On the way back, we stopped at Cheesecake Factory to grab a couple of slices. I am unsure why Iris consented to this since she dislikes cheesecake, but I got a plain slice, while the grasshoppers shared a slice of 30th Anniversary or some such chocolatey nonsense.

The Seventh Day

After missing Research Methods this morning - I woke up the minute it was beginning - I got to my appointment with my co-op advisor in Meserve. We went through my resume and fixed up a thing or two and discussed the co-op process. She, too, had no answer for the question of July-September housing, which did nothing to soothe my anxiety regarding that subject. Post-meeting, I received a mysterious text from Alanna, imploring me to GET TO CURRY RIGHT NOW. I went without question, and found a Carnevale event going on, with several tables of ethnic food for free. We had a nice lunch and stuffed ourselves like true college students, and it was good.
Alaric and I prepared for the men's hockey game against UNH with some liquid courage and rap music. He presented an interesting argument for why people like hip-hop: "the cadence of the human voice." I agree completely, it's not far removed from poetry. The game itself was a 3-1 loss, but who cares? I put on Waking Life once we got home, and we were joined by Iris, Alanna, Haley, her roommate Molly, Harrison, and another trumpet named Clay. Everyone seemed to enjoy it (at least to a degree), and it was peaceful. Harrison and I engaged in an intellectual conversation about birth rates, urban sprawl and world population as well.
          Quotes of the day:

"It's gonna be like C-SPAN. Except in space." - Jared
